Winter is coming. A phrase we have all become very familiar with. But unlike the Game of Thrones characters, for us this means more porridge in the morning and hot drinks in the afternoon. The be all and end all of which, is of course hot chocolate. It is so easy to make a healthy hot chocolate and just as easy to make a vegan one if that’s your thing. Just choose your milk, heat it up, add some melted dark chocolate and cacao powder and your done. You can of course get a little more imaginative with it, which is where I decided to venture with this wonderful recipe.
Adpatogens are everywhere right now and whilst I am sceptical about their claimed health benefits, this hasn’t stopped me from supplementing with Ashwaganda every morning for the last two months. An adaptogen is a compound that is said to restore a state of homeostasis in the body. Which means if you are over or under producing a particular hormone, it will balance you out. If you are stressed, it will lower your cortisol production, if you are sad, it will increase your dopamine production etc. This is where my faith dwindles. How can any substance know what you need and provide you with it as opposed to providing the same nutritional profile every time? Anyway, more research is needed to validate supplementing with adaptogens, but if – like myself – you have already started experimenting with adaptogens you will know many of them aren’t particularly palatable. Enter the adaptogenic hot chocolate. This rich and delicious beverage is paired perfectly with a – few – ginger stem oat biscuits from Nairns.
