Going refined sugar free four years ago meant that I could no longer drink the fuel of most American football players, sports drinks; Gateorade, Lucozade, Powerade etc. (not something I miss in the slightest!). For most people that would be fine but when playing touch rugby for long periods of time, like at tournaments or long training weekends I found myself fatiguing a little earlier than usual. My body was missing the sugar.
To counteract this and keep my energy levels high throughout a training session I used to regularly snack on food that contained a lot of natural sugar such as medjool dates and bananas. Although then found that I was consuming far too much food on those days and that the food was taking to long to digest. I needed to be consuming my sugar in liquid form.
So like thousands of others I turned to coconut water. It kept me sharp and I love the flavour, still do. After quite some time I grew board of having the same drink at every session, so I started to look for alternatives. That is when I came across Aloe Vera water. Naturally high in sugar and like coconut water it is packed with vitamins and minerals to support a healthy lifestyle. Aloe Vera grows in tropical climates all around the world and is cultivated primarily for medicinal and commercial uses. I never knew that you could drink the stuff!
My favourite Aloe Vera product to date is Drink Alo. They blend Aloe Vera juice with fruit juice to make a delicious range of drinks. There are a lot in the range so you are bound to find something that you like, but my personal favourite is the passion fruit flavour. They also leave little bits of Aloe Vera pulp in the drink. They are like little bubbles of juice that pop when you bite into them. YUM!
They come in two main types; Original (great to take to training) and Light/low sugar (great for everyday consumption). Well that is how I consume them anyway.
The Original comes in the following flavours;, mangosteen+mango, pomelo+pink grapefruit+lemon, wheatgrass, watermelon+peach, Fuji apple+pear, pomegranate+cranberry, pineapple+guava+seabuckthorn, honey. My favourite is the manosteen+mango, it is so good!
The Light comes in; orange+pasion fruit, honey, cucumber+cantelope. My favourite is the orange+passion fruit.
You can buy Drink Alo in; Waitrose, Ocado, Planet Organic, Whole Foods, Holland & Barrett, Asda etc. all the usual suspects and many more retailers.
